Paraguay international Almirón signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at St. James' Park after arriving from MLS side Atlanta in the January 2019 transfer window.

He began his career with Cerro Porteño in his homeland before moving to Argentinian Primera Divisíon outfit Club Atlético Lanús in the summer of 2015.

After 16 months with the Granate, Ascunción-born Almirón joined Atlanta in December 2016 and was named MLS Newcomer of the Year at the end of his first campaign at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The pacy wideman twice featured for the MLS All-Star team, and was selected in the MLS Best XI at the end of both of his seasons with the Georgia-based club.

Since arriving on Tyneside, Almirón has become a fan favourite thanks to his ceaseless running, speed and creativity with his blistering form seeing him record a hugely productive 2022/23 season, which ended with 11 goals, the club's Goal of the Season award and a clutch of individual monthly gongs.

The following season, he was again a regular, and netted United's opener in their memorable 4-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Tyneside.
