Newcastle United Women were backed by 24,092 fans at St. James' Park on Sunday, as the Magpies eclipsed Bradford City Women 6-1 in the FA Women's National League Division One North.

Braces from Beth Guy and Charlotte Potts, and goals from Georgia Gibson and Rachel Lee, ensured Becky Langley's side put on a show, despite Bradford pulling back a late consolation.

After kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes to allow fans to get into the ground, the Magpies wasted no time in imposing themselves on the visitors.

With six minutes on the clock, after a Gibson dead ball was cleared to the edge of the box, Anna Soulsby struck an effort that fizzed narrowly wide of the post.

Another set-piece produced another opening for the Magpies, with Kacie Elson's effort from outside the area lacking the bend to trouble Bradford goalkeeper Tiffany Whelan.

In the 12th minute, Newcastle went close again. Soulsby got in down the right and fired in a low cross towards Elson, unmarked in the box, but Whelan saved the left-winger's effort with her feet.

Elson soon tried her luck again, wriggling through the challenge of her marker before seeing her effort thwarted by Whelan at the near post.

But the visitors' resilience was broken after 22 minutes, with Gibson's in-swinging corner being headed home by Guy.

Newcastle were at the double soon after, with Gibson's corner this time landing on the head of Potts, who gratefully nodded home from close range.

As half-time came into view, Langley's side continued to threaten. Barker spun a defender just inside the box and fired a left-footed effort narrowly off target, then Soulsby went agonisingly close to adding a third with 37 minutes played, but she couldn't quite get on the end of Elson's dangerous cross from the left.

On the stroke of the interval, Elson was again at it, skipping past a defender down the left and curling an effort a whisker wide.

The Magpies started the second half with the same vigour as the first, with Gibson twisting in the box before firing past the post.

A third was soon added by Langley's side, with Lee expertly finding the run of Gibson, who made no mistake at the second attempt, after initially being denied by Whelan, to slide the ball home.

A fourth soon followed, with Elson being taken down in the box to win a spot-kick before Lee stepped up and gave Whelan no chance.

Just moments later, Barker thought she had added a fifth after latching onto Soulsby's clipped ball, but her finish was ruled out for offside.

With 20 minutes to go, Guy added her second and Newcastle's fifth of the game, with Potts' long free-kick landing on the head of the midfielder.

With ten minutes to play, the visitors got one back when Charlie Ramsden's free-kick floated over the head of Grace Donnelly and into the back of the net.

Five minutes before full-time, Potts rose high once more to head home another Gibson corner, putting the icing on the cake of a superb performance and another monumental afternoon for United's women's team.
