Newcastle United Women played out a goalless draw away to Halifax United Women in their penultimate match of the 2023/24 season, despite creating several opportunities.

Becky Langley's side were the dominant side throughout the 90 minutes and looked to carve open a stubborn Halifax defence all afternoon but were left frustrated just a week on from lifting the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division title.

It was almost a similar start to last weekend - when Emma Kelly struck after a matter of seconds against Huddersfield Town Women - as Kacie Elson had an effort cleared off the line before then striking the foot of the post before three minutes had been played.

Elson was causing all sorts of trouble for Halifax's backline and United's number 11 saw her second effort of the game bounce back out off the bar after 20 minutes following a speculative curling strike from out wide.

United struggled to carry much momentum in the first half as Halifax dug in and defended their box very deep, seeing the scores level at half time.

It was more of the same in the second 45 minutes, but Newcastle did almost go in front when substitute Bridget Galloway's first touch was a well-blocked effort by Maddie Oliver, who stopped a certain goal.

As United continued to push for a winner, Hannah Greenwood met Elysia Boddy's corner at the near post but could only glance her header over the bar as time ticked on.

Newcastle were the side pushing for all three points and thought they'd stolen them in the final five minutes when Anna Soulsby found herself unmarked at the back post but could only send her header into the arms of Becky Flaherty.

The Lasses continued to push all game and were threatening from wide areas but Halifax were well organised and not giving up many opportunities as they battled for a point.

With the hosts camped in their own half, United almost found a breakthrough in the dying seconds when a loose ball slipped past the formidable Flaherty, but captain Shauna Legge was on hand to swipe it away off the line and preserve the draw.

Newcastle United Women: Hannah Reid, Amber-Keegan Stobbs (c), Liv Watt (Sharna Wilkinson 75), Jodie Bartle, Tyler Dodds (Beth Lumsden 75), Emma Kelly, Katie Barker (Bridget Galloway 58), Kacie Elson (Anna Soulsby 46), Hannah Greenwood, Jasmine McQuade (Paige Bailey-Gayle 63), Elysia Boddy
