Newcastle United Under-18s recorded a fifth consecutive home win across all competitions following a 4-1 victory against Crystal Palace in the Under-18 Premier League Cup on Thursday.

The Toon teenagers took the lead inside nine minutes at Whitley Park through Darren Palmer’s strike before Joe Brayson doubled the hosts’ advantage five minutes after the restart.

Palmer’s impressive finish extended United’s advantage further in the Group G clash and, despite Jesse Derry narrowing the deficit for the Eagles’ youngsters in the closing stages, Luke Craggs’ close-range finish added gloss to the scoreline.

In the ninth minute, Palmer opened the scoring for United’s youngsters after a loose ball fell into the teenager’s path before firing the ball beyond Palace goalkeeper William Eastwood.

Brayson, son of former Magpies striker Paul, ought to have doubled Newcastle’s advantage before the half-time whistle after Wooster’s shot from Trevan Sanusi’s cutback was only parried by Eastwood before the ball bounced freakishly away from the goalline and behind the versatile forward.

In the 50th minute, though, Brayson netted his third goal of the season at under-18 level. After Thomas Bryant advanced forward, the left-back picked out the 16-year-old, who controlled the pass before lashing the ball beyond Eastwood.

Newcastle goalkeeper Aidan Harris, who was named on the bench for the Magpies’ UEFA Champions League clash away at AC Milan in September, produced an excellent stop to prevent Samuel Lusale from halving the deficit, getting down low to push away the Palace forward’s close-range header following a dangerous cross from the right flank.

In the 69th minute, Palmer netted his second goal of the day after racing onto Watts' lofted through ball and, following a kind ricochet from Palace defender Rio Cardines, produced quick feet to evading the rushing Eastwood before cooly placing the ball home from a narrow angle.

Harris’ hopes of, arguably, a deserved clean sheet were distinguished in the 79th minute as Derry pulled a goal back for the visitors, slotting the ball into the left-hand corner after a defensive mix-up.

However, Newcastle quickly regained their three-goal cushion through Craggs’ close-range effort, the defender’s second goal in as many matches.

As Leo Shahar’s cross floated towards the back post, Magpies skipper Rory Powell was on hand to fire the ball into the six-yard area, with Craggs - who was on target in Newcastle’s 3-0 win against Sunderland Under-18s last weekend - on hand to place the ball into the roof of the net.

Newcastle United Under-18s are back in Premier League Cup action on Saturday, 25th November when facing an away trip to Liverpool (kick-off 11am GMT).
