Swansea City 3 Newcastle United 1

Forward Ollie McBurnie – who featured for the Swans’ first team against Arsenal on Saturday – notched a hat-trick against a young United side, who pulled one back late on through Tom Heardman.

McBurnie netted his first just ten minutes in. The Scot gathered the ball deep on the right, stepped back inside, and superbly found the far corner with a rasping strike.

Midway through the first half, McBurnie was on target again, sliding the ball beneath the legs of Nathan Harker after meeting Tyler Reid’s low cross from the right.

Swansea continued to pile forward, Harker forced into a fine save from Alex Bray’s header before McBurnie clipped the crossbar after pouncing on a loose ball.

Owain Jones called Harker into action again before the break, drawing a smart save from the Magpies’ stopper before Owen Bailey scrambled the ball clear.

Harker could do little to prevent McBurnie from netting his hat-trick just before the hour-mark, however, the frontman coolly stroking the ball home from 12 yards after Bailey’s challenge on Bray.

George Bryers almost added a fourth for Swansea after 67 minutes, but saw a venomous effort tipped over by Harker.

After soaking up a considerable amount of pressure, United clawed a goal back at the other end, as Heardman continued his impressive run of form with a cool finish.
