Newcastle United Under-23s conceded a stoppage time equaliser as the young Magpies were held to a 3-3 draw against their Scunthorpe United counterparts in the Premier League Cup.

The young Magpies fell behind at the Sands Venue Stadium through George Miller's early opener before strikes from Elliot Anderson and Tom Allan gave Newcastle the lead before half time.

Allan netted his brace shortly after the restart but Miller completed his hat-trick with two goals in the latter stages of the contest to secure a point in Group C.

Following an impressive 4-2 win against Stoke City in Premier League 2, United's Rosaire Longelo was included in the starting line-up after providing a goal and assist against the Potters while Dan Langley started in goal ahead of Jake Turner.

Newcastle's youngsters - who reached the Premier League Cup final last term - conceded in the ninth minute against the run of play as Lewis Butroid's through ball found Miller - who beat the offside trap before rolling the ball past Langley.

Scunthorpe almost doubled the lead shortly after taking the lead as midfielder Ryan Colclough saw his deflected strike cannon off the crossbar.

Newcastle levelled in the 21st minute as Ludwig Francillette's searching ball found Lewis Cass, who controlled the ball terrifically before seeing a low strike saved by Scunthorpe goalkeeper Adam Kelsey but, following a mix-up between the Iron's defence, the ball fell kindly to Anderson, who slotted the ball home to grab his third goal in four games.

It got even better for Ben Dawson's side as Allan put the visitors into the lead. After producing a clever turn to beat Jo Cummings, the forward raced towards goal before placing the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Three minutes into the second half, Allan extended Newcastle's lead. After Anderson sent a pass up the line, Rosaire Longelo raced along the left wing before delivering a fine cross into the path of Allan, who made no mistake from close-range with a cool first-time finish.

Scunthorpe struck the woodwork for a second time as Colclough's intended cross sailed towards Langley's goal, striking the crossbar before Andy Dales' follow-up was drilled narrowly wide of the target.

Defender Oliver Walters was withdrawn through injury and, after making three substitutes already, Newcastle were forced to play the latter stages with ten men.

Miller set up a frantic finish after nodding home from inside the penalty area following Colclough's free kick despite Langley getting a hand to the striker's header.

And, in stoppage time, Newcastle were dealt a devastating blow as Miller completed his hat-trick for the Iron. After substitute Harry Jessop sent a dangerous corner into a crowded penalty area, Langley kept out Cummings' original header before Miller netted from the rebound to secure a point.

Newcastle's hopes of qualification to the knockout stages remain on track, with United's youngsters still to face Scunthorpe and Hull City at home as well as a trip to West Bromwich Albion.
