Harrogate Town 2 Newcastle United U23s 1

Aaron Martin's late winner handed Harrogate Town a 2-1 friendly victory over Newcastle United Under-23s on Sunday afternoon.

Connor Hall's first half header gave the League Two side the lead in North Yorkshire.

But 16-year-old winger Kyle Crossley levelled for the Magpies six minutes after the restart with a superbly-taken solo strike, giving Chris Hogg’s young charges a big boost against their EFL opponents.

But substitute Martin's 83rd-minute winner meant Simon Weaver's men came out on top in what was the Magpies' first outing of pre-season.

Hogg elected to field two largely different line-ups either side of half time, as is often customary during pre-season, with the likes of Matt Bondswell, Jack Young and Tom Allan all starting at the EnviroVent Stadium.

United's youngsters held their own in the opening exchanges but could have fallen behind 13 minutes in, when Rory McArdle connected with George Thomson's corner inside the six yard box. It required a fine stop from Jake Turner, who instinctively threw a strong hand out to prevent what had looked a certain goal.

The chances all fell to Weaver's side in the first period. Luke Armstrong, son of one-time Magpies forward Alun, dragged one wide after some good work from the dangerous Thomson and Simon Power hooked an effort over.

Alex Pattison flashed a shot wide too, but just a couple of minutes before the break they went ahead. Thomson's corner was met by the towering figure of Hall, whose header was too powerful for Turner.

Recent arrivals Cameron Ferguson and Remi Savage were among those deployed in the second half, which started brilliantly for Hogg's youngsters. The visitors broke swiftly with Lucas De Bolle sliding a pass through for Crossley, who beat his man with ease and dispatched an unerring low finish beyond Mark Oxley to level the scores.

Substitute goalkeeper Will Brown did well to deny Jack Muldoon soon after, while a trialist for the home side struck the outside of the upright as Town rallied.

And eventually, their experience told, as Martin's close-range finish inside the last ten minutes won it for the hosts on a scorching afternoon at Wetherby Road.

United's under-23s will now travel to face Darlington in their next pre-season friendly on Saturday.
