Newcastle United Under-21s were narrowly edged out in a 3-2 defeat against their Manchester United counterparts in the Premier League 2 on Saturday afternoon.

The young Magpies conceded within the opening 60 seconds of their league encounter at the Carrington Training Centre following James Nolan's strike before the visitors responded in swift fashion following James Huntley's close-range header.

Joe Hugill's penalty sent the Red Devils back in front before the half-time break before United's youngsters equalised for a second time, with Dylan Stephenson netting five minutes after the restart after converting from Josh Scott's cross.

Newcastle's youngsters, however, fell behind for a third time as Shola Shoretire fired home from Maxi Oyedele's cutback as United's second-string ended 2023 with a narrow defeat.

Newcastle United Under-21s: Will Brown, Charlie Wiggett, Cathal Heffernan (c), Remi Savage, Josh Scott, Nathan Carlyon (Charlie McArthur 68), Ellis Stanton (Jordan Hackett 90), James Huntley (Michael Ndweni 46), Dylan Stephenson, Amadou Diallo, Ben Parkinson (Kyle Crossley 69).
