Newcastle United Under-21s 4 Bedlington Terriers 1

Newcastle United Under-21s progressed into the semi-finals of the Northumberland Senior Cup following a 4-1 win against Bedlington Terriers on Tuesday night.

The young Magpies fell behind in their last-eight tie at Whitley Park following Joe Ames' strike for the Northern League Division Two outfit before two goals in the space of seven first-half minutes, courtesy of Amadou Diallo's penalty and Ellis Stanton's header, sent the hosts ahead at the break.

James Huntley's second-half penalty extended United's advantage before Kyle Crossley's clinical finish in the closing stages added gloss to the scoreline, setting up a semi-final tie away at Ashington in the process.

Newcastle's youngsters, targeting a first Northumberland Senior Cup title since 2018, trailed in the 26th minute against the non-league side following Ames' strike. After the United defence were unable to clear the ball from the penalty area following a teasing corner, the Terriers defender was on hand to stroke the ball into the top left-hand corner.

United's second-string, however, drew level in the 30th minute as Diallo netted from the spot. The 21-year-old winger, who made his Premier League debut for the Magpies against Chelsea in November 2023, was bundled over inside the box before emphatically converting from 12 yards, drilling his attempt into the left-hand corner.

In the 37th minute, Newcastle took the lead through Stanton as the teenage midfielder rose high from Leo Shahar's curling cross from the right flank before guiding a powerful header into the net.

In the second-half, Bedlington went close to equalising as Joseph Thompson flicked the ball into Owen Imeson's path before the physical striker's first-time effort whistled wide of the left-hand post.

Johnny Emerson, a representative of Scotland at under-19 level, almost doubled Newcastle's advantage shortly after the hour mark as the 18-year-old midfielder's low drive from Trevan Sanusi's neat cutback was blocked by Terriers goalkeeper Finn Hodgson.

Diallo almost added his second goal of the evening after racing onto Sanusi's pass before his shot at goal struck Hodgson's chest before Stanton's lofted rebound was tipped over the crossbar by the Terriers shot-stopper.

In the 70th minute, Newcastle doubled their advantage through Huntley's spot-kick. After Sanusi was bundled over inside the penalty area following a dangerous run towards the byline, the Ashington-born midfielder cooly slotted his attempt from 12 yards into the bottom right-hand corner despite Hodgson guessing the correct way.

Crossley, introduced from the substitutes' bench before the restart, extended Newcastle's lead further. After Sanusi dispossessed Jack Watson, the 16-year-old winger fed Crossley, who drilled a low effort into the net via the left-hand post.

Joe Brayson, son of former Magpies forward Paul, almost made an immediate impact from the bench as the 16-year-old striker latched onto Johnny Emerson's deft pass before the teenager's low drive towards goal was blocked by Hodgson's legs but it would not prove costly as Newcastle's second-string advanced into the last-four.

Newcastle United Under-21s: Will Brown, Leo Shahar, Ciaran Thompson (c), Charlie McArthur (Jordan Hackett 59), Dylan Charlton, Jamie Miley (Kyle Crossley 46), Johnny Emerson, Ellis Stanton, Trevan Sanusi (Joe Brayson 75), Amadou Diallo, James Huntley (Rory Powell 83).
