Connor Teale's stoppage-time equaliser denied Newcastle United Under-21s maximum points in the Premier League Cup following a 2-2 draw against their Fleetwood Town counterparts on Saturday afternoon.

After a goalless first half, Kyle Crossley’s strike opened the scoring in the Group F encounter at Whitley Park, the teenage winger’s second goal in as many games at under-21 level before Ben Parkinson’s sliding finish, following a commendable assist from United defender Remi Savage, doubled the young Magpies’ advantage shortly after the hour mark.

However, Theo William’s close-range rebound in the closing minutes of the cup contest set up a nervy finale before Teale’s scrambled finish in the second minute of stoppage-time resulted in a fourth successive draw across all competitions for United's under-21 side.

Ben Dawson made two changes from the side which were held to a 1-1 draw against their Nottingham Forest counterparts last week as Lucas De Bolle, a representative of Scotland at under-21 level, returned to the starting XI following a one-match suspension while Durham-born teenager Ben Parkinson was handed a start.

Emil Krafth was also named in the starting line-up, making his second outing for United’s second-string after playing the opening 45 minutes against Forest, the Swedish full-back’s first game since sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Tranmere Rovers in August 2022.

In front of 265 spectators, it was Parkinson who was unfortunate not to open the scoring in the opening half hour as a series of neat passes from the hosts resulted in Krafth’s low cross finding the 18-year-old forward but his strike flew wide of the left-hand post.

Krafth was involved in a further attacking move minutes later, with the Sweden international intercepting the ball on the edge of their own penalty area before picking out Dylan Stephenson but the Blyth-born forward’s drilled effort was tipped over the bar by Fleetwood goalkeeper Tom Donaghy.

Parkinson, who signed his first professional contract for his boyhood club last summer, struck the crossbar in agonising fashion after cleverly controlling Lucas De Bolle’s pass before his resulting shot was impressively tipped onto the woodwork by Donaghy before the loose ball was clawed away from the goalline.

The young Magpies began the second half in bright fashion as Crossley scored within four minutes of the restart. After Jamie Miley unselfishly elected to pick out Crossley, who evaded his marker before powering a low effort into the far left-hand corner.

Newcastle almost doubled their lead in quick fashion as Parkinson’s deft chip was blocked by Donaghy before Lucas De Bolle’s low strike inside the box was also pushed away by the Cods shot-stopper.

Newcastle’s second-string added a second goal in the 64th minute through Parkinson’s sliding effort. After Savage managed to hold off a late challenge, the Liverpool-born centre-back threaded a fine pass into Parkinson’s path before the teenage forward struck a low shot towards Donaghy’s front post.

Despite Newcastle asserted authority for large spells of the tie, Fleetwood pulled a goal back in the 85th minute through Williams as the Town striker was alert, following Jude Smith’s point-blank save inside a crowded box, to tuck home the loose ball from inside the six-yard area.

United’s youngsters were dealt a crushing blow in the 92nd minute as Teale netted an unlikely leveller, diverting the ball into the top-right hand corner to the shock of the home side.
