Anthony Munda's late leveller secured a point for Newcastle United Under-21s in an entertaining 2-2 draw against their Wolverhampton Wanderers counterparts in the Premier League 2 on Monday night.

The young Magpies began the league encounter in bright fashion after taking an early lead courtesy of Trevan Sanusi's impressive solo finish, the 16-year-old winger's first goal for the club at under-21 level.

The visitors, however, found themselves back on level terms on the stroke of half-time following Tom Edozie's close-range finish before the winger netted his and Wolves' second of the night after the hour mark, drilling a low effort into the net.

Newcastle's youngsters continued their pursuit for a late leveller and were rewarded as Munda netted his first goal at under-21 level in the dying stages, cooly slotting the ball into the right-hand corner to secure a valuable point in the young Magpies' push for the play-off spots.

Ben Dawson made five changes from the side which suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Liverpool over a fortnight ago as Joe White, who made his Premier League debut in a 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth at St. James' Park, started in the middle of the park.

Sanusi, who joined the Magpies from Birmingham City last summer, and fellow 17-year-old Dylan Charlton were also named in the starting XI as well as goalkeeper Will Brown and teenage winger Kyle Crossley.

In the 7th minute, Newcastle took the lead as Sanusi collected the ball on the right wing and, after racing past Wolves full-back Aaron Keto-Diyawa, saw his resulting shot from the byline squeeze into the net.

White, who spent the first half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at League Two side Crewe Alexandra, went close to doubling the visitors' lead as the midfielder's free-kick from the edge of the box was pushed away by Wolves goalkeeper Jimmy Storer.

Leo Shahar, who joined Newcastle from Wolves last summer, produced an important clearance to prevent his former side from levelling after cutting out Josh Esen's dangerous low cross into the penalty area before Ciaran Thompson, who joined United's youth set-up at the age of 13, produced a key block to deny Leon Chiwome.

With the half-time whistle approaching, Newcastle were dealt a tough blow as Wolves levelled the scoring through Edozie's equaliser. After Ty Barnett's low strike was pushed away by Brown, the loose ball was turned into the net by the Wolves winger.

Thompson went close to restoring United's one-goal cushion shortly after the restart as the Blyth-born defender regained possession before his deflected effort from the edge of the box flew narrowly over the crossbar.

In the 62nd minute, Newcastle fell behind as Edozie netted his and Wolves' second goal of the evening. After Ojinnaka's initial header struck the crossbar, the ball was recycled back into the box before Edozie was on hand to fire a low drive into the net.

James Huntley, introduced from the substitutes' bench, almost netted a late leveller but the Ashington-born midfielder, who celebrated his 20th birthday last weekend, directed a header from Joe White's in-swinging corner over the crossbar.

In the 90th minute, Newcastle ultimately rescued a point through Munda's impressive finish as the 17-year-old central midfielder, a representative of England at under-18 level, latched onto Huntley's flick before cooly placing the ball into the top right-hand corner.

The Cowgate-born teenager was unfortunate not to grab a stoppage-time winner after controlling Sanusi's cutback from the left byline before seeing his resulting strike blocked inside a crowded penalty area.

Newcastle United Under-21s: Will Brown, Leo Shahar, Ciaran Thompson, Alex Murphy, Dylan Charlton (Jordan Hackett 46), Anthony Munda, Joe White (c), Alfie Harrison (Sean Neave 85), Trevan Sanusi, Kyle Crossley (Ellis Stanton 78), Ben Parkinson (James Huntley 78).
