David Proud Of Ed-Wound

Canadian starlet receives seven stitches after clash of heads during West Ham draw

By Craig Hope

BATTLE-worn David Edgar emerged rather gingerely from the away team dressing room at Upton Park on Saturday night proudly sporting seven stitches above his right eye.

The young Canadian staggered from the action during the closing stages of the 2-2 draw with blood gushing from a nasty head wound following an accidental clash with Carlton Cole.

And, despite a throbbing headache, the 20-year-old was able to joke about the injury when he spoke to nufc.co.uk after the game.

"I've had seven stitches but I think I'll be telling people I've had ten!" said Edgar following his second start of the season.

"The gaffer has told me that I'm a proper centre-half now and I've got the scar to prove it.

"But that's part of the game being a defender and I'll happily put my body on the line if I have to."

Edgar was thrown in to the Magpie starting XI after an injury to Abdoulaye Faye and once again put in an assured display at the heart of the United rearguard.

And, while admitting it was a disappointing start, the reserve team captain praised the never-say-die attitude of the Newcastle players.

"Really, it was a disappointing start from us, and we didn't deserve to be going in at half time on level terms," he added.

"But the team's had a great fight and great spirit since the gaffer's come in, and we showed that.

"We didn't give up, and we had a couple of chances in the second half.

"When the strikers do get the right service, it's frightening to watch."
