Daryl Janmaat was left disappointed that Newcastle United's "fantastic" first half performance at Chelsea in Saturday was in vain, as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat.
Oscar and Diego Costa struck either side of half-time at Stamford Bridge, but the scoreline did not tell the full story of a Barclays Premier League contest in which the Magpies raced out of the traps and could have been comfortably in front by the break.
Yoan Gouffran and Remy Cabella both forced saves out of Petr Cech, while Moussa Sissoko thumped a rising drive against the woodwork, as United dominated proceedings.
But two minutes before half-time they were made to pay for not finding the back of the net as Oscar put the finishing touch on a quickly-taken corner.
Early in the second period Costa put Chelsea out of sight and Janmaat told nufc.co.uk: "Everyone is disappointed by the result.
"We had some good chances in the first half, and if we scored one of them we would have deserved it.
"For the first 43 minutes we were fantastic. We showed some good football, we attacked well and created some big chances.
"We were better than Chelsea in that time and had to score but didn't. They are a good team, so we always knew they would be dangerous and could hurt us and so it proved.
"There is no shame in this performance, even though the result was not what we wanted. We played well in the first half and that is good for our confidence - we just have to take it into Southampton next weekend."
