Craig Hope reports from the home of Lancashire FA ...

SHOLA Ameobi came through 70 minutes of his latest comeback match as Newcastle United's Reserves were beaten 3-1 at Bolton.

The 25-year-old added to the run-out he got during last week's 5-1 thrashing of North East rivals Middlesbrough as he edges closer to a first-team return following six months on the sidelines.

But it was the Trotters who dominated the early exchanges, Rob Sissons going close with an 8th minute header which looped inches over Fraser Forster's crossbar after he beat the Magpies keeper to Chris Basham's free-kick.

Kevin Wolze saw a 20-yard volley shave Forster's far post less than 60 seconds later before the hosts duly took the lead on 22 minutes.

Nathan Woolfe latched onto a hopeful punt in behind United's backline before rolling the ball into the path of the supporting Wolze who calmly side-footed home from the edge of the area.

Bolton added a second before half-time with a swift breakaway from a United corner, Woolfe again the provider as he slipped in centre-forward Temitope Obadeyi (38) who finished coolly from just inside the 18-yard box.

Obadeyi added a third within a minute of the restart of the second period, out-muscling Alex Francis in the right channel before cutting inside and drilling low past Forster.

Ameobi tried his best to get Lee Clark's side back in the game, climbing highest to nod a Matty Pattison free-kick into David Edgar's path, but the Canadian's prodded effort from close range was somehow hooked from the line by James Sinclair.

Wolze should have got a second with a close range header which flashed wide, and Jaroslaw Gojut saw a header cleared off the line by Alex Patterson before Edgar (86) grabbed a consolation for the Geordies, heading home James Troisi's deflected flag-kick from six yards out.

The win meant that Wanderers clinched the Reserve League title as other results on the night also went their way.
