John Carver was left to lament a disappointing night, as Newcastle United went down 3-0 against Everton at St. James' Park.
Goals from Ross Barkley, Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman secured maximum points for the Toffees, who Carver believes offered a more clinical threat in the final third than United.
Barkley's opener was arguably one of the goals of the season - an individual effort which began on the halfway line, seconds after the Magpies had slung a corner into their box.
And assistant manager Carver believes that, while Barkley's run and finish was full of quality, the goal was completely avoidable.
"We've got a corner, we don't lock it in, and it comes out to the edge of the box where I thought Cheick was going to head it back in," he told nufcTV following the final whistle.
"But it drops to them and they break on us.
"It's a little bit disappointing when you work on locking in set plays, we talk about it every day and we didn't do it well enough."
He continued: "Bags of credit to their manager and the team as they have put together a very, very good side.
"I thought we started the game well and had three great chances in the first five minutes. We weren't clinical enough, and that was the difference on the night.
"We went in 1-0 down at the break and were disappointed with that because I didn't think there was a great deal between the two sides.
"But on the night it was about clinical finishing, and we didn't finish."
