KK: David OK After Ed-Wound

Written by Newcastle Utd

Young Canadian defender receives seven stitches after West Ham clash

KEVIN Keegan has told David Edgar that he is now a "proper" defender after the Canadian left Upton Park with seven stitches in a nasty head wound.

The 20-year-old clashed heads with Carlton Cole in the closing stages of Saturday's 2-2 draw with the Hammers and left the field with blood gushing from his brow.

But Toon boss KK joked afterwards that his young centre-back still needs to add a broken nose to his injury CV before becoming a true hard-faced stopper.

"He's taken a knock but he's OK and has had seven stitches in it.," said Keegan.

"I've told him he's a proper defender now and all he needs is the broken nose."

The Academy graduate was starting just his second game of the season after Abdoulaye Faye was forced to withdraw from the squad because of injury.

And Keegan believes that both Edgar and defensive partner Steven Taylor grew in stature as the game went on.

"We had two young centre-backs playing today and they got better as the game went on," he added.

"It was a disappointing first half an hour or so but after that we improved and looked more solid after the break."
