Newcastle United are sad to report the death of former outside-left Liam Tuohy, who passed away on Saturday (13th August) in Raheny, Dublin, at the age of 83.
One of the top performers in the Republic of Ireland, Tuohy arrived on Tyneside from Shamrock Rovers in 1960 as a 27-year-old international with a big reputation as a skilful winger who could score goals.
He was purchased as Bobby Mitchell's successor in the number 11 shirt and made a good start with the Magpies, showing plenty of spirit but then suffered - like many of his colleagues - when the side became entangled in a relegation fight in the 1960/61 campaign.
Tuohy was a regular for the following season but lost his place to Jimmy Fell and after 42 games, and nine goals, for the Magpies he returned to Ireland in 1963.
Rejoining Shamrock, for a period he reverted to a part-time footballer, also working for the HB ice-cream company as a sales manager.
Liam, though, remained associated with Irish soccer in several roles and was a prominent figure in the game for more than 50 years including a short spell as manager of the Republic's international side during the early 1970s.
One of the players he gave a debut to was Mick Martin, who fondly remembers him, and for many years Liam was associated with the Home Farm club.
The thoughts of everyone at Newcastle United are with Liam's family and friends at this sad time.
