Sammy Ameobi was back in the North-East on Tuesday night as Cardiff City travelled to Middlesbrough in the Championship.
But the Bluebirds were beaten 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium, with Ameobi named on the bench after missing the South Wales side's previous game - a 4-1 victory against Brighton - through suspension.
Cardiff took the lead through a stunning goal from Fabio, the former Manchester United full-back, but Middlesbrough quickly responded as Matthew Connolly could only divert Gaston Ramirez's effort into his own net.
Boro went in front in the 63rd minute through Ramirez and ten minutes later, Ameobi was introduced in place of Peter Whittingham.
David Marshall saved a Grant Leadbitter penalty in the 81st minute but two minutes later, David Nugent made the points safe for the home side - although Ameobi flashed an effort just wide three minutes from time.
Before kick-off, emotional tributes were paid to former Middlesbrough commentator Ali Brownlee, who died earlier this month at the age of 56.
In League Two, Alex Gilliead and Macaulay Gillesphey both started for Carlisle United as they travelled to AFC Wimbledon.
But the Cumbrians were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Mark Gillespie was sent off in the 50th minute, and Gilliead was sacrificed for substitute keeper Dan Hanford.
To make matters worse, Paul Robinson scored what proved to the only goal of the game just seconds later. Gillesphey played the full match.
Meanwhile York lost 2-1 at home to league leaders Northampton. It was the visitors' tenth successive league victory.
Kyle Cameron and Lubo Satka both played the whole game in the Minstermen defence.
In the Vanarama National League, Gateshead picked up an excellent point at leaders Cheltenham.
The Heed drew 0-0, with Brendan Pearson an unused substitute for Neil Aspin's men after extending his loan spell until the end of the season.
