St. Mirren suffered a sixth successive Scottish Premier League defeat as they were beaten 1-0 by Hearts on Saturday.
Paul Dummett played the full 90 minutes in his 11th appearance for the Buddies but couldn't inspire his temporary team to victory at Tynecastle.
The Saints are now only one point clear of bottom-placed Dundee after Danny Grainger's deflected free-kick beat goalkeeper Craig Samson.
It was a game of few chances, with Dummett and his defensive colleagues largely doing their job in front of the 16,443 crowd.
Buddies boss Danny Lennon told BBC Scotland: "What really pleased me today was the level of performance and the character shown by the players from start to finish - the commitment, the passion.
"If we've got that for the remaining games of the campaign, we'll be fine."
Meanwhile, teenage striker JJ Hooper missed Darlington's 2-1 win over Celtic Nation with a dead leg. The Quakers went seven points clear at the top of the Northern League with the victory.
