Danish ace so close to snatching derby glory
By Craig Hope
GALLOWGATE debutant Peter Lovenkrands admits that he thought he'd snatched a last-gasp derby winner against Sunderland.
The Danish winger, on as an 80th-minute substitute, crafted a yard inside the penalty area before clipping a ball to the far post in the dying seconds of Sunday's game.
But 50,000 Geordies could only watch on in despair as the delivery drifted above and beyond a helpless Marton Fulop only to land the wrong side of the Hungarian's crossbar.
And Lovenkrands told nufcTV: "I thought I'd won it!"
"I was just trying to clip it to the far post but then it started drifting towards the goal and I thought it was going in.
"It would have been nice but it wasn't to be."
Lovenkrands was warming up on the Milburn Stand touchline when United were awarded a 63rd-minute penalty which was duly dispatched in emphatic fashion by Shola Ameobi.
And the 29-year-old joked: "I said to Shola after the game that he could have put it a bit higher in the top corner!
"But it was a great penalty and it got us right back in the game.
"We were much better second half but I think 1-1 was probably a fair result."
He added: "I was just itching to get on and be part of it.
"I think I was stood up the whole game either watching or warming up.
"It was great to get on and the atmosphere was amazing, it's just a shame we didn't get the win."
