St. James' Park Upgrades Continue

New tarmac around pitch surrounds means ashes will be sealed in at Gallowgate End
As part of the many upgrades that are currently going on at St. James' Park and the Training Ground, the club are in the process of laying tarmac around the perimeter of the pitch which will replace the old and worn cinder track.
This new development will improve the quality and look of the stadium, and is also necessary for technical reasons, but it will impact on those supporters who have already laid, or wish to lay, family ashes inside St. James' Park.
Facilities Manager Eddie Rutherford said:
"We're fully aware of the issue of spreading ashes around the pitch and would wish to fully respect those ashes that are already there and have been for a number of years.
"In laying the tarmac we feel we are 'sealing in' the ashes that are already there to protect them for eternity and people will still be able to lay flowers on anniversaries if they so wish.
"We do regret however that we will no longer be able to provide the facility for fans wishing to spread ashes in the future."
