Former Newcastle United player Steve Carney has died at the age of 55.
Carney, who could play in either defence or midfield, appeared 149 times for the Magpies between 1979 and 1985.
Wallsend-born, he made his name in the non-league circuit, starring for North Shields and Blyth Spartans before being snapped up by United for £1,000 after a successful trial in October 1979.
Carney's debut came on 1st December the same year in a 2-0 victory over Fulham at St. James' Park, and played under four managers on Tyneside - Bill McGarry, Joe Harvey, Arthur Cox and Jack Charlton
He scored just one Newcastle goal, on the opening day of the 1984/85 campaign in a 3-2 triumph away at Leicester City, and just a few months later - in November 1984 - made his final appearance in the famous black and white stripes.
The Club is saddened to hear of Steve's death and our thoughts are with his family and friends.
