World Cup Woe For Toon's Ed

Edgar and Canada crash out of U20 World Cup after final group game defeat

By Craig Hope

DAVID Edgar's World Cup misery continued as hosts Canada crashed out of the U20 tournament having lost all three group games without scoring a goal.

The Canadians face Congo in Edmonton on Sunday and needed a win to maintain their slender hopes of qualification.

But the Africans ran out 2-0 winners, Ermejea Ngakosso (26) opened the scoring from close range and Gracia Ikouma added a second from just inside the area on the hour mark.

Magpie youngster Edgar was booked for a foul just after half-time, and the home side had goalkeeper Asmir Begovic sent off for a handball outside the area in the 73rd minute.

The result meant Canada finished the tournament as the only ever host nation to have failed to score at an Under-20 World Cup.
