2021/22 season review - September

Newcastle faced a further three fixtures in September, including the club's 1,000th Premier League fixture, but were still unable to taste victory in another winless month which saw Steve Bruce's side languishing towards the relegation zone.

Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 1

With just one Premier League win in 28 visits to Old Trafford, very few were predicting a rare away victory for the Magpies against the Red Devils.

Cristiano Ronaldo, making his highly-anticipated second debut for Manchester United, opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Javier Manquillo's low drive levelled the contest, the Spaniard's first goal in Newcastle colours.

However, Ronaldo regained the hosts' lead before late strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard confirmed a heavy defeat.

Newcastle United 1 Leeds United 1

Allan Saint-Maximin's strike earned a point for the Magpies as both sides were made to wait for their first Premier League victory of the season.

Under the lights of St. James' Park, Newcastle found themselves trailing in the opening stages as Raphinha's curling cross evaded everybody before finding its way into the bottom left-hand corner.

However, Saint-Maximin netted his second goal in as many home games as the French winger skipped past a group of Leeds defenders before firing the ball home at the end of a hectic first-half.

Watford 1 Newcastle United 1

Newcastle were left to rue a number of missed chances against the recently promoted Premier League outfit at Vicarage Road.

Sean Longstaff's impressive first-half finish sent the visitors ahead before the North Shields-born midfielder, along with Miguel Almirón and Joelinton, missed  opportunities in front of goal to extend the Magpies' advantage.

Sarr punished the visitors after heading home from Josh King's flick-on before Jacob Murphy wasted a golden opportunity when put through on goal in the dying stages, shooting tamely at Hornets goalkeeper Ben Foster.
