Steve Bruce made ten changes to the side which won at West Ham on Saturday, handing debuts to Ryan Fraser and Mark Gillespie, and it was Fraser who scored the only goal of the game after racing onto Miguel Almirón's excellent through-ball.
The United head coach admitted his side were somewhat fortunate to come out on top against their Championship opponents, but the Magpies did enough to set up a tie at Morecambe next week.
