Toon in training: Magpies gear up for Doncaster date

Newcastle United travel to Doncaster Rovers for their second pre-season friendly of the summer on Friday night, and are set to be backed by more than 3,000 travelling supporters at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Steve Bruce's men started their pre-season campaign in disappointing fashion with a 1-0 defeat at York City on Sunday, so will be looking for an improved result and performance against their League One opponents.

Karl Darlow is still isolating after testing positive for Covid-19 last week, while fellow goalkeepers Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman are also unavailable after being identified as close contacts, meaning Dan Langley is set to start in goal again after making his senior bow at the weekend. Max Thompson, 16, was on the bench and trained under the watchful eye of goalkeeping coach Simon Smith on Wednesday, along with Will Brown, another teenage keeper.

They weren't the only youngsters involved in the day's training session, with Tom Allan, Oisín McEntee and Jack Young also taking part. Joelinton, who limped off in the first half against York, also joined in although will be assessed further before a decision is made on whether he's fit enough to feature on Friday.
