Attwell to referee Canaries clash

Stuart Attwell will referee Newcastle United’s Premier League clash at Norwich City on Saturday.

The 36-year-old will be the man in the middle at Carrow Road (3pm kick-off) in what will be the Magpies’ first away game against the Canaries since a 2-2 draw in Norfolk in February 2017.

It will also be the first domestic match Nuneaton-born Attwell has taken charge of this term, with his previous two appointments coming in the Europa League.

He refereed Aris Salonika’s goalless draw with AEL Limassol last month, showing 11 yellow cards in that tie, before overseeing Malmo’s 3-0 home win over Zrinjski Mostar in the same competition at the start of August.

Of Attwell’s 30 outings last term, just two involved Newcastle – the 3-0 win over Cardiff City at St. James’ Park in January, and the 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in April in which he awarded the visitors what proved to be the decisive penalty, scored by Luka Milivojevic.

He issued just 99 yellows and four reds in those 30 games during 2018/19, which included fixtures in the Premier League, Championship, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and League Two.

Attwell will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Derek Eaton on Saturday, while Tom Nield will be the fourth official and Simon Hooper and Neil Davies fill the roles of VAR and AVAR respectively.
