Backhouse in the middle at Tranmere

Anthony Backhouse will referee Newcastle United's Carabao Cup second round clash with Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night.

United head to Prenton Park, home of the League Two side, hoping to secure a spot in the next round with victory over Micky Mellon's men, with EFL regular Backhouse appointed to oversee the fixture.

Cumbrian official Backhouse has been officiating since his teenage years, progressing through the pyramid with stints as both a referee and an assistant referee since his promotion to the EFL.

A decade ago, the 31-year-old was taking charge of National League fixtures as well as Premier League second string fixtures, but he has since established himself in both League One and League Two.

In December 2019, Backhouse was appointed as a fourth official in the top flight for the first time, and was also the fourth official during the Magpies' 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Cheltenham Town at St. James' Park in August 2016.
