Brooks, at 33, is one of the younger officials currently on the top flight and EFL circuit, and was promoted to the Premier League in 2021 after almost a decade of operating as an assistant in the division.

The Leicestershire official's two previous appointments involving United so far this term came prior to Christmas, with Brooks in the middle for the Magpies' 5-1 home win over Brentford and the 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Bournemouth.

He showed just three yellow cards across those two fixtures, including one to Kieran Trippier in that cup triumph at St. James' Park, and he is yet to issue a red card in the Premier League so far this campaign. Brooks has, however, dismissed four players in his 25 outings across all competitions, including two in UEFA Under-19 European Championship qualifiers.
