Burt: 'Manchester United is a good test for us'

Older members of Becky Langley's squad may not have had the same privilege of having key role models within the women's game, as the visibility simply wasn't there.

On Sunday, Burt and the rest of the Newcastle squad will lock horns with Marc Skinner's Red Devils, whose squad features Euro 2022 winners Mary Earps and Ella Toone, as well as a host of other experienced Women's Super League players.

Ahead of the Adobe Women's FA Cup clash at Leigh Sports Village (kick-off 12pm GMT), Burt says the Magpies will look to impose themselves on the hosts, who sit two divisions above Newcastle.

"It's absolutely crazy," she said. "I am really excited.

"When I found out we had Manchester United I remember just jumping up and down. I definitely had idols in that team growing up and it's just about showing what we can do.

"There is no reason the team can't go out and have a good performance against Manchester United. We have definitely got the capabilities to get an upset if we can, so we are really looking forward to it."

Newcastle Women are unbeaten in all competitions this season, and currently lead the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division in their first term as a full-time football team.

The routines that have seen Langley's side rise to the top of the table give Burt faith that the Magpies will remain focused on the game, rather than the occasion on Sunday.

"We need to just treat it as another game," she added.

"I think it is important that we stay level-headed and focus on the opponent and treat it as any other game.

"I think it is going to be a good checkpoint for the group.

"It is really good timing because we are unbeaten this season and is good for us to get a really good test.

"We will be taking the game very seriously but it's definitely a good test for us."
