Cass signs new Magpies contract

Newcastle United are pleased to confirm that defender Lewis Cass has signed a new contract with the club.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Magpies' Academy at the age of 12, is yet to make his senior debut for his boyhood club but has been rewarded with a new deal which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2022.

Born in North Shields, Cass joined Hartlepool United on loan for the duration of the 2020/21 campaign and, after receiving the man-of-the-match award on his professional debut against Aldershot Town, played 16 consecutive games for the National League outfit, who currently sit in second place.

Primarily playing as a right-back but capable of featuring in the heart of defence, Cass was an ever-present for United's under-23 side last term, captaining the young Magpies on a number of occasions and was named on the bench during the Magpies' Emirates FA Cup third round tie at Rochdale in January 2020.

He told NUFC TV: "I'm delighted. It's everything a local lad dreams of to sign a new contract with Newcastle United. I'm thankful for the club, staff and players that have helped me get to this position.

"Personally, I want to try and get around 35-40 games under my belt (at Hartlepool) which will set me in good stead for next season and hopefully closing the gap on the first-team. As a homegrown player, my dream is to play in front of 52,000 supporters."
