Charman joins North East neighbours after Magpies departure

Written by Dan King

Luke Charman has signed for National League North side Darlington after leaving Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old forward's contract at St. James' Park expired at the end of last month and he departed after more than seven years on Tyneside.

But he has now joined Alun Armstrong's Quakers, where he will link up with former team-mate Jamie Holmes as well as ex-Magpies frontman Adam Campbell.

Durham-born Charman joined United at the age of 15 and after impressing at Academy level, became a regular scorer for the club's under-23s. He also spent time on loan with Accrington Stanley in 2018.

Charman was one of a handful of players to leave Newcastle this summer, along with Rob Elliot, Jack Colback, Jamie Sterry and fellow youngsters Víctor Fernández, Liam Gibson and Nathan Harker.

Speaking to Darlington's official website, Charman said: "I was really impressed by what Alun told me about the club, I'm really looking forward to playing and scoring a few goals."

Armstrong, also speaking to the Quakers' official website, added: "Luke has shown plenty of promise at Newcastle, but his chances of progressing there were very limited.

"He will give us extra options up front, and I believe that we will realise his potential, making him an excellent striker in this league."
