Donnelly delighted as Magpies record victory on Kingston Park return

Written by Aaron Hindhaugh

Grace Donnelly was 'proud' of the way her Newcastle United Women team-mates performed on their return to Kingston Park against Liverpool Feds last weekend.

The Magpies recorded an emphatic 5-1 win on Sunday which leaves them just one win away from clinching the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division title and recording back-to-back promotions.

Having not played at Kingston Park for 42 days, the Newcastle fans were keen to show their support for the players, something goalkeeper Donnelly was blown away by even before warming up.

"The crowd really pushed us on and helped us to pick up the three points," Donnelly told nufc.co.uk. "It was amazing; before we even arrived to do our pitch walk, people were coming into the stands already which is fantastic.

"They always give us that extra push and nobody has fans like ours."

Newcastle put in a professional display in front of a 4,256 crowd, with Donnelly acknowledging just how impressive United were on and off the ball.

Becky Langley's team refused to take their eyes off the next game despite knowing that the title is within touching distance, and they reaped the rewards by recording their fourth biggest league win of the season.

"It's a testament to our character to put everything behind us and focus on this game," Donnelly added.

"We're very process-driven and take every game as it comes and that was our mantra for the week as always.

"We managed the ball well from back to front and I think we should be proud of the goals we scored because some of them were really great."

United's number one was also keen to acknowledge hat-trick hero Paige Bailey-Gayle, who took her tally for Newcastle to seven goals since her February arrival from Crystal Palace Women.

Donnelly added: "It was fantastic work from Paige. The way she strikes a ball - it makes my life hard in training, put it that way. Her first goal into the bottom corner was a great strike."

Newcastle United Women's next game is at home to Huddersfield Town Women on Sunday, 14th April. Kick-off at Kingston Park is at 14:00 BST on Sunday, 14th April and tickets are on sale here, priced at £5 for adults and £1 for children.
