Euro disappointment for McEntee and Ireland

Written by Luke Vinton

Republic of Ireland's hopes of progressing to the European Under-19 Championship semi-finals took a negative blow following a 1-0 defeat to France on Thursday night.

Oisin McEntee, a defender for Newcastle United Under-23s, completed the full 90 minutes of the Group B clash in Yerevan, Armenia's capital city, but was left on the losing side.

French forward Wilson Isidor netted in the latter stages of the contest at the Banants Stadium, leaving Ireland situated on one point after two group matches, following a 1-1 draw against Norway in their opening fixture.

Ireland face Czech Republic on Sunday, 21st July, with the Irish knowing a win in their final Group B encounter, along with Norway failing to beat France, would secure their place in the semi-finals.

McEntee is more than familiar with playing in important international matches after featuring for Republic of Ireland in last year's European Under-17 Championship quarter-final against the Netherlands.

The teenage centre-back took over in goal when Jimmy Corcoran was controversially shown a second yellow card when he was deemed to have stepped off his line in saving a penalty in scenes which were shown around the world.

McEntee will be looking to become another young Magpie to win silverware for his country, after Freddie Woodman helped England Under-21s lift the Toulon Tournament back in 2017.
