It's Mason in the middle for cup quarter-final

Written by Dan King

Lee Mason will be the referee when Newcastle United take on Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday (kick-off 6.30pm BST).

The eagerly-anticipated match at St. James' Park will be the 48-year-old's fourth Newcastle match this season - with the Magpies losing on the three previous occasions.

Mason presided over the Magpies' 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa in November, December's 2-1 loss to Everton at St. James' Park, and the 4-0 reverse at Arsenal in February, all in the Premier League.

So far, Mason - who refereed this season's Carabao Cup final between City an Aston Villa - has brandished just one red card this term. He has shown 70 yellow cards in all competitions.

He will be assisted on Sunday by Scott Ledger and Adrian Holmes. Andrew Madley will be the fourth official. Andre Marriner will be the video assistant referee and he'll be aided by Stephen Child.

While supporters will not be able to attend Sunday's game, the match will be broadcast live on BBC One.
