Jeff Stelling on the march for Prostate Cancer UK

Sky Sports presenter and North East native Jeff Stelling set off from St. James' Park on Monday morning as he embarks on his fourth marathon fundraising walk for Prostate Cancer UK.

Jeff will be joined by a host of fellow fundraisers for his epic four-part journey across the country - including Magpies' assistant coach Stephen Clemence for one section, with a total of four walking marathons across four different regions ahead.

The aim is to fund Prostate Cancer UK's lifesaving research to improve testing, treatments and care for those affected by the most common cancer in men.

THE ROUTE

After leaving from St. James' Park, where he finished his 2017 march, Jeff will take in Durham Cricket Club before completing the North East leg in Sunderland.

From there, he will head to Yorkshire, before marching through Merseyside on Wednesday and finishing up in London on Saturday, 4th September.

For the march through Merseyside, Jeff will be joined by Stephen Clemence, who continues to be a passionate supporter of the charity.

Stephen's father, Ray, who was a legendary goalkeeper for Liverpool and England, sadly passed away in November 2020 after a brave battle with prostate cancer.

Ray Clemence, 1948-2020

Stephen told prostatecanceruk.org: "My dad was a tireless campaigner for Prostate Cancer UK for many years, and it's a cause that me and my family will continue to support. So I'm so proud and grateful that Jeff Stelling will be marching to honour his memory.

"Whenever I see Prostate Cancer UK's Man of Men badge, I think of my dad. I think the charity has really helped to make progress, and Jeff's been a great supporter of the charity for many years now.

"Jeff has been so great at galvanising the football community across the UK. He wears the badge every week, but by walking multiple marathons for the cause he continues to go the extra mile too.

"Money raised will support men like my dad, and their families, so we're all so grateful to him and all the people signing up. It's shaping up to be a great event."

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling

Jeff said: "One in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. I deal in stats, but that one still shocks me.

"Last year, we lost the great Ray Clemence to prostate cancer. A terrific goalkeeper and a terrific human being.

"I also lost my mate, Lloyd Pinder, to the disease a few months earlier. I met Lloyd on the second day of my very first march for Prostate Cancer UK.

"This highlights what an indiscriminate disease this is, and it’s for men like Lloyd and Ray, their families and everyone affected by prostate cancer that we march again."
