Lee: We were relentless

More than 24,000 supporters came out in support of Becky Langley's side for the women's team's third-ever outing at St. James' Park, as braces for Beth Guy and Charlotte Potts and goals from Georgia Gibson and Lee - from the penalty spot - sealed an emphatic victory in the FA Women's National League Division One North.

Having gone in at the break two goals to the good, Lee said that the mentality of the Lasses was clear: "Now we go again."

Speaking to nufc.co.uk after the match, she said: "I think we could have fallen into a trap of getting caught up in the occasion today.

"It was amazing, but you would have seen each time we scored it was relentless in terms of, 'now we go again' and we didn't stop for the full 90 minutes.

"I'm really pleased with the scoreline and how the team performed today."

On a personal note for the Newcastle midfielder, it was Lee's first-ever outing at the iconic stadium, having missed both of the previous St. James' Park showcases.

Now back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and having topped off her comeback by scoring at the Gallowgate End with a second-half penalty, Lee says she was grateful to be involved this time around.

"I did have a feeling we were going to get a penalty and I knew that would fall on me if we did," she added, discussing her goal. "It was a great experience. I've missed out on two occasions and supported the girls when we've been here and it was just so nice for me to be a part of it today.

"I'm really proud of everyone for the performance we put in and it was a great scoreline and a great result."

The official attendance count was 24,092, meaning Langley's side has been backed by more than 22,000 fans on three separate occasions at St. James' Park in less than a year.

Such unwavering support is something that Newcastle Women don't take for granted, says Lee, and she believes it only aids the Magpies in achieving their aims this season, and beyond.

"It's huge. It's amazing," she said. "You see teams in the Championship and the WSL (Women's Super League) and they're not pulling in those kinds of attendances.

“We are so proud that we are attracting crowds like that and we want to say a big thank you to those who come out and support us.

“Whether it's people that are here every week or people that are coming for the first time, they do make a difference and if we can keep that crowd behind us I'm sure we will go all the way.”
