Longelo "buzzing" after late winner against Sunderland

Written by Luke Vinton

Super sub Rosaire Longelo was left delighted after his late goal sealed three points for the young Magpies in their 3-2 derby win at Sunderland.

After falling behind by two goals to the Black Cats on Friday, United's second string managed to complete an excellent comeback, with Tom Allan and Elias Sørensen netting for the Magpies.

Longelo, who was introduced from the bench with less than half an hour to play, then won a penalty for Newcastle after being brought down in the box but Cal Roberts was unable to take advantage as his spot-kick was surprisingly missed.

However, it was Longelo who stole the headlines in the dying stages after reacting quickest to Sørensen's dangerous free kick, which was only pushed away by Anthony Patterson, before burying his effort into the roof of the net.

Longelo told nufc.co.uk: "I'm buzzing for the victory. We had to get the three points today as it was a massive game for us and I believe we deserved the win in the end.

"I was pleased with my personal performance, especially scoring the match winner, but I was also pleased with the reaction of the group too. It wasn't a great first half but we put it right in the second to get the result late on and that's all that matters."

The second string's attention now turns to an eagerly awaited clash against Sunderland's senior side, with a place in the Checkatrade Trophy quarter-finals at stake.

Whether or not Longelo earns his place in the starting eleven at the Stadium of Light, the winger remains focused on his own job and believes the occasion will be a learning curve for himself and the Academy squad on Tuesday night.

He added: "It does not matter whether I start or I'm on the bench, I'll always try my best to make an impact and help my team mates out by giving my all in every match.

"We now need to concentrate on the next game against Sunderland, which myself and the lads are very excited for. We can't wait for the match on Tuesday and it should be a good experience for all of us. Hopefully we can get the win at the Stadium of Light too as we have a very good team with a strong mentality."
