Madley in the middle at City

The match officials for Newcastle United’s trip at Manchester City on Wednesday have been confirmed, with Andy Madley set to referee the Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium (6pm kick-off).

United take on Pep Guardiola’s men for the second time in two weeks, following the FA Cup quarter-final showdown at St. James’ Park just over a week ago, and it will be just the second time this term that Madley has overseen a fixture involving the Magpies.

His first appointment involving Newcastle came in February, when Steve Bruce’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by Burnley on Tyneside – a game in which the 36-year-old brandished seven yellow cards, including for to the hosts’ Javier Manquillo, Danny Rose, Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle.

Yorkshire official Madley became a Select Group referee last summer, and has since taken charge of games in the top flight as well as the Championship, League One, Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

Madley – who was the man in the middle of Charlton Athletic’s League One play-off final victory over Sunderland at Wembley last season – has issued 73 yellow cards and six reds in 21 games across all competitions in 2019/20 so far, keeping his cards pocketed on just one occasion.

Richard West and Andy Garratt will be the assistant referees on Wednesday, with Lee Mason confirmed as fourth official.

Andre Marriner will fill the role of VAR, assisted by Harry Lennard, while Mark Dwyer will be the replacement official.
