Match officials confirmed for Rovers cup clash

Jarred Gillett will referee his first-ever Newcastle United fixture on Tuesday night as the Magpies take on Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup (7:30pm kick-off).

The Australian official will be the man in the middle of the midweek cup tie at St. James’ Park as Steve Bruce’s side play their first home game of the season against the Championship outfit.

Gillett, who only became an EFL referee in 2019 after moving to England to study at Liverpool John Moore’s University, has previous experience in the A-League – where he won referee of the year five times – as well as stints in the Indian Super League, the Chinese Super League and the Saudi Professional League.

Tuesday’s fixture will be the first time he has overseen a match involving United, though, with the majority of his appointments having come in the Championship since his refereeing debut in England in April 2019, when he took charge during Morecambe’s 4-0 win over Cheltenham Town in League Two.

Last term, the 33-year-old refereed games in the Championship, League One, League Two, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, dishing out 95 yellow cards and just two reds in a total of 29 outings.

So far this season, his only fixture came on Saturday, when he watched over Luton Town’s 1-0 win at Barnsley in the second tier.

Philip Dermott and Paul Hodskinson will assist Gillett under the lights on Tuesday, with Kevin Mulraine set to act as fourth official.
