Newcastle United continues support for city's foodbanks
Newcastle United staff have been volunteering at Newcastle West End Foodbanks throughout the week as part of the club's A Helping Hand at Christmas campaign.
Staff members, including Chief Commercial Officer Peter Silverstone, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, Academy Director Steve Harper and the club's Senior Management Team, all took part in the volunteering which has helped provide hundreds of families in Newcastle with essential packages for the festive season.
With support offered to the Newcastle West End Foodbank all week, players from Newcastle United Women also took part, making Christmas hampers at the Venerable Bede Church in Benwell, just a few miles from St. James' Park.
The latest figures show that 37.9 per cent of children in Newcastle are living in poverty with over 280 tonnes of food parcels required each year.
Contributing towards the demands to feed families in the region, staff at Newcastle United have been donating essential food each day through an advent countdown programme.
Speaking on the club's support, Newcastle Foodbank Chief Executive, John McCorry, said: "It's fantastic to have received this volunteering support from the club, especially at our busiest time of year. There's a real community spirit, through the generosity of NUFC fans donations and with assistance from the Reuben Foundation we hope we’ve been able to add some festive cheer for people and families in our communities who need it most at this time of year."
