'North East Remembers' weekend includes St. James' Park service

A service at St. James' Park was part of a weekend of events organised by the North East Memorials Project to mark the final centenary anniversary of the Great War.

On Saturday, the Mayors of Newcastle and Gateshead were joined by dignitaries from the Western Front centres of Ypres, Arras and the Somme to carry out a memorial service at the club's War Memorial to remember the 23 Newcastle United footballers who died during the conflict.

Club Ambassador Bob Moncur and historian Paul Joannou took part in the service, accompanied by military standard-bearers and buglers.

A stadium tour followed before the 50-strong party headed off to other events which included a Newcastle Cathedral service, dinner on-board HMS Calliope and a Remembrance event at The Response Memorial, followed by the Mayor's luncheon at the Civic Centre.
