Pawson on patrol for Manchester United match

Written by Dan King

Craig Pawson will referee Newcastle United's Premier League game against Manchester United on Monday (kick-off 8pm GMT).

It'll be the first time that the South Yorkshire official has taken charge of a match involving the Magpies this season, although he was on Video Assistant Referee duty for last weekend's defeat against Manchester City.

Pawson also refereed this fixture last season, when the Red Devils ran out 4-1 winners in October 2020. That was one of four Newcastle games he officiated last term; the 42-year-old was the man in the middle for a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, the 3-2 victory over Southampton and a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, all at St. James' Park.

This term, he's already shown as many red cards - five - in 15 matches across the Premier League, Europa League, Europa Conference League and a World Cup qualifier as he did in the whole of last season. He has also shown 62 yellow cards.

Pawson has been a Premier League referee since 2013 and on the FIFA International Referee list official since 2015. He was the fourth official for both the 2015 League Cup final and the 2015 FA Cup final.

On Monday, he will be assisted by Ian Hussin and Darren Cann, while Anthony Taylor will be the fourth official. Peter Bankes will be the Video Assistant Referee at Stockley Park, assisted by Timothy Wood.
