Pope's prize: United keeper wins Premier League Save of the Month award

Written by Dan King

Nick Pope has won the Premier League's inaugural Castrol Premier League Save of the Month award.

The Newcastle United and England goalkeeper produced a stunning one-handed stop to push away Adam Lallana's close-range header against Brighton & Hove Albion in August.

That helped Pope to keep a clean sheet and earn United a point at the Amex Stadium - and has also seen the 30-year-old win the monthly award.

Also nominated were stops from Ilian Meslier of Leeds United, José Sá of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur's Hugo Lloris, Emiliano Martínez of Aston Villa, Brentford's David Raya, Danny Ward of Leicester City and Nottingham Forest's Dean Henderson.

The award caps an impressive start to Pope's United career following his summer move from Burnley - he has already won the FUN88 Player of the Month award for August, and was shortlisted for the Premier League's EA Sports Player of the Month award, losing out to Manchester City star Erling Haaland.

After receiving his award, Pope said: "It's a nice little extra - something you don't quite expect. It's nice to be the first winner of the award.

"As a goalkeeper, if you make some saves and you get beat, you don't really have a great feeling that you take from the game afterwards. So to contribute to putting a point on the board definitely makes sure it means something."
