Scott "buzzing" to tyke on Barnsley

The young Magpies kicked off their trophy trail with a point against Doncaster Rovers following a goalless draw at the Eco-Power Stadium last month and will aim to enhance their hopes of progressing from Group E of the competition's Northern Section with a positive result at Oakwell (kick-off 7pm BST).

After missing out on a bonus point against Rovers, losing 4-2 on penalties, Scott believes the squad can take inspiration from their previous cup clash ahead of facing the Tykes, who finished bottom of the Championship last term and currently occupy sixth place in League One.

"All of the squad are buzzing to play against Barnsley," the Gateshead-born teenager told nufc.co.uk. "They are a League One team and all of the lads love playing in those kind of matches against first-team opposition.

"Our last game, against Doncaster, will give us a big boost. We were disappointed with how it ended and we are determined to avoid that in the next game so we can get a strong result.

"You can see in the games we've recently played that we are starting to find our rhythm and hopefully we keep it going and get the next win in our next game."

Newcastle's second-string recorded back-to-back Premier League 2 victories on Friday night following a narrow 2-1 victory against their Nottingham Forest counterparts at Whitley Park, with Scott netting both goals for the hosts.

The 19-year-old, who joined United's academy in 2013, was delighted to get his name on the scoresheet and claim maximum points after a nervy finish to the Division Two encounter.

"I thought we started the game very well and created a lot of games," he said. "As the game went on, though, we should have kept a clean sheet but, overall, it was great to win the game and get three points.

"I just reacted to the first goal and was the first one there at the back post to slot it in with my right foot. My second goal was quite an easy one as I was pressing the goalkeeper and, fortunately, he made a mistake which I pounced on. I was delighted to get my reward for trying to anticipate that. 

"There was a lot of character shown from the team to grind out the win, especially from Jude (Smith) with some great saves. The lads deserved credit for getting the win because we were struggling towards the end of the match."

Tickets for tonight's Papa John's Trophy Northern Group E clash at Oakwell are £12 for adults and £7 for young adults (19 to 21-year-olds) as well as 65 and over.

Under-18s can attend for £1, although children under the age of 14 must attend with a parent/guardian over the age of 18 to gain stadium access.
