Shahar selected for England Under-17s

Teenage full-back Leo Shahar has been named in England's Under-17s squad ahead of three 2024 European Under-17 Championship qualifying round fixtures this month.

The 16-year-old right-back, who joined the Magpies from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2023, is part of Greg Lincoln’s 21-man squad which travel to Croatia ahead of playing three qualifying matches in the hope of securing progression into the elite round of qualifying in March 2024.

The top two countries in each of the 13 groups, along with the five third-placed teams with the best records against those who have qualified from their pool, will secure a spot in the elite round.

March’s elite round will then determine the 15 teams who will join hosts Cyprus at the UEFA Under-17 European Championship finals next summer.

England’s under-17 side will get underway on Friday, 3rd November against the Faroe Islands at the Ivan Laljak-Ivić Stadium (kick-off 11am GMT) in Zaprešić before facing their Kosovo counterparts on Monday, 6th November at the same venue (kick-off 11am GMT).

The Young Lions will conclude Group 9 when taking on hosts Croatia on Thursday, 9th November at the Stadion Branko Čavlović-Čavlek in Karlovac (kick-off 12pm GMT).

Shahar, part of England's Under-16 side which won the Mondial Montaigu Tournament in April 2023, made his England Under-17s debut during a friendly against Norway last month, playing the full 90 minutes of a 3-0 win at St. George’s Park.
