Taylor to referee Magpies' Brighton clash

Anthony Taylor has been confirmed as the referee for Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Brighton on Saturday night (8pm kick-off).

United make the long journey to the Amex for a highly-anticipated game against Graham Potter's men just before the international break.

And Wythenshawe whistler Taylor is the man tasked with keeping order on the south coast as both sides go in search of vital points.

It will be the 42-year-old's second appointment involving Newcastle so far in 2020/21 as he took charge of the 2-1 home defeat to Leeds United in January, booking the Magpies’ Fabian Schär on that occasion.

It has been another busy season for one of the English game's most accomplished referees, who has overseen matches in the top flight, FA Cup, Champions League and UEFA Nations League, as well as the European Super Cup final, this term.

Taylor - who has two FA Cup final appearances under his belt, as well as a League Cup final - has had 27 outings across all competitions, keeping his cards pocketed just once.

In that time, he has issued 91 yellow cards and four reds, but is yet to dismiss a player since the turn of the new calendar year.

Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will assist Taylor at the weekend, while Kevin Friend will be the fourth official.

Stuart Attwell is the VAR for the contest, and will be assisted by Stephen Child.
