Team news: Matty Longstaff starts at Deepdale

Written by Dan King

Teenage midfielder Matty Longstaff will make his first senior start for Newcastle United in the Magpies' pre-season friendly at Preston North End.

The 19-year-old, who is the younger brother of Sean, appeared from the bench in United's Premier League Asia Trophy games against Wolves and West Ham - and played alongside his sibling for the first time in a first team game against the Hammers in Shanghai seven days ago.

Now he's been named in the starting XI against the Sky Bet Championship outfit - although Steve Bruce is likely to make a number of substitutions in the second half in what is his first game in the dugout.

Freddie Woodman is in goal, with Javier Manquillo, Federico Fernández, Fabian Schär and Paul Dummett lining up in defence.

Longstaff is joined by Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden in midfield, with Matt Ritchie and Rolando Aarons out wide and Yoshinori Muto, who scored the only goal of the game against West Ham, leading the line.

New club record signing Joelinton is among the substitutes, as is Miguel Almirón, who returned to training last week following his exploits with Paraguay at the Copa América. Young full-back Lewis Cass is also on the bench.
