Team news: Miley starts against the champions

Lewis Miley starts in the middle for Newcastle United's Premier League visit of Manchester City this afternoon as Eddie Howe makes one change for the clash at St. James' Park (kick-off 5.30pm GMT).

The Magpies face Pep Guardiola's side, targeting an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League crown this season, in their opening home game of 2024 and Howe makes a singular change from last weekend's 3-0 victory away at Sunderland in the Emirates FA Cup as Miley, who made his full competitive debut for his boyhood club in September's Carabao Cup third round victory against Man City, replaces the injured Joelinton.

Martin Dúbravka continues in-between the sticks behind a four-man defence, with Fabian Schär and Sven Botman - who celebrated his 24th birthday on Friday - continuing their partnership in central defence while Kieran Trippier, who captains the hosts, and Dan Burn occupy the respective flanks.

Bruno Guimarães and Sean Longstaff are both named in the starting XI while Miguel Almirón, who scored in last season's 3-3 draw against City in August 2022, and Anthony Gordon will aim to provide attacking support for Alexander Isak, who has netted four goals in his last three competitive fixtures for the Magpies.

Howe, who is set for his 650th game as a manager this afternoon, has a number of defensive options to deploy from the substitutes' bench, including club captain Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummmett - who both kept a clean sheet in this season's Carabao Cup tie against City.

Emil Krafth, who netted his first goal for United in a 4-3 home defeat against City in May 2021, and Lewis Hall, who made his full Newcastle debut against the Sky Blues in September, also feature on the bench as well as Matt Ritchie, who scored the winner in Newcastle's last Premier League victory against the seven-time champions - a 2-1 triumph in January 2019.

Teenage striker Ben Parkinson, who made his Premier League debut for his boyhood club against AFC Bournemouth in November, is also included as well as goalkeeping duo Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Kieran Trippier (c), Fabian Schär, Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Bruno Guimarães, Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley, Miguel Almirón, Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak.

Substitutes: Loris Karius, Mark Gillespie, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett, Alex Murphy, Lewis Hall, Matt Ritchie, Ben Parkinson.
