Thompson targeting Tyne-Tees triumph

United's youngsters take on Boro's second-string at St. James' Park, their penultimate home fixture of the 2022/23 campaign but will be unable to qualify for the Division Two play-off spots, currently 11 points adrift of the final qualification place.

Thompson, who has featured at right-back for Newcastle's under-21 side in recent weeks, is excited at the prospect of featuring at the club's stadium and remains determined for the squad to end their season on a positive note.

The 18-year-old, who joined Newcastle's Academy at the age of 13, told nufc.co.uk: "We're all looking forward to it and playing at the stadium adds to the occasion of it. We've been going through a tough patch at the minute so I think this is a really important game to try and get three points.

"With the first-team playing at that stadium, it makes the group feel like we're a part of that. There should be a few more fans watching and when they're behind you, cheering you on, it definitely adds to that. It does give you that extra ten per cent, which can be really important.

"The last two games haven't gone the way we'd hoped they were and we need to make sure, in the last three games, we end as strongly as possible. The training has very competitive lately and all the lads are certainly up for it to try and come out on top against Middlesbrough.

"A win would be a massive boost for the team's confidence. Leading into this game, we've been preparing well and need to be physically ready against Boro as they are a tough side to play against."

Thompson made his debut for Newcastle's second-string in February 2023 and has relished the challenge in progressing from under-18s to under-21s football.

The versatile full-back revealed his transition into the group has already provided him with positive benefits as he bids to gain further experience with the young Magpies. 

The Blyth-born defender added: "It's definitely a big step, both physically and mentally, but I do love a challenge. I feel this has brought out a different side to me. I'm maturing already moving into under-21 level and I am playing in a different position to what I've done with the under-18s. 

"It's different pictures on the pitch and I think there is an offensive side to it because, as a full-back, you do get forward much more than a centre-back. It'll spur me on to play different positions in the future as I'm gaining more experience.

"I think everyone will say who moves from under-18s to under-21s football that it is very challenging physically. Everyday is much more intense within actions and running but I'm really enjoying it and know it will help me in the near future."
